HISTORY
Last September 11 marked the 100 year anniversary of when Gandhi launched his first nonviolent campaign giving birth to a global movement.
New Yorkers for a Department of Peace (NYDOP), in partnership with Arun Gandhi, the Peace Alliance and Sony Pictures, commemorated the occasion by organizing: 100 Years of Nonviolence: Gandhi and September 11, 1906-2006. We enrolled people from 64 venues (including 8 abroad) to participate in screenings of Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film Gandhi including a screening at Regal Cinema across from World Trade Center on September 11, 2006.
CHOOSE PEACE
This year we are launching CHOOSE PEACE, a series of events sponsored by New Yorkers for a Department of Peace that will be hosted around the world, honoring the 11 Days of Global Unity from Sept. 11-21. The CHOOSE PEACE campaign will raise awareness and funds for the Department of Peace Campaign.
September 11 represents a choice point for us as human beings; we can continue to choose violence, or we can choose proven strategies of prevention and peaceful conflict transformation. This September CHOOSE PEACE!
